Blackcurrants contain splendidly rich levels of health-promoting micronutrients, even compared with other superfood berries. The berries are a rich source of vitamin C, A, B1, B5 and B6, and minerals such as iron, copper, calcium and phosphorus. Their exceptionally rich source of vitamin C and natural phenolic compounds, such as anthocyanins make them very beneficial for cardiovascular and brain health. Blackcurrants (Ribes nigrum) is a woody shrub in the family Grossulariaceae grown for its tasty berries. It is native to temperate parts of central and northern Europe and northern Asia.
Blackcurrants were first cultivated in the 11th century in Russian monastery gardens. It was not until the 17th century that its cultivation spread to other parts of Europe. Until today, leaves of blackcurrants are used as flavouring agents in the manufacture of teas or vodkas in Russia.
During World War II, most fruits rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, became difficult to obtain in the United Kingdom. From 1942 onward, blackcurrant syrup was distributed free of charge to children under the age of two and may have given rise to the lasting popularity of blackcurrant in Britain.
