Germany, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

As the least densely populated state in Germany, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has nature in abundance along its pristine coastline of the Baltic Sea, well-known for its historical seaside resorts with spectacular architecture and the Lake District in the south.

Here, many protected habitats with a varied flora and fauna offer a nectar-heaven for our bees to make their raw honeys among the many national parks, including the UNESCO Jasmund and Müritz National Parks, rivers and lakes. During summer, not only our bees are attracted to this natural beauty but also enormous numbers of birds, followed by wildlife lovers to witness the dance of the cranes around the lakes and shallow waters.

In this untouched paradise, each hive of our bees will fly 90,000 miles, the equivalent of three orbits around the earth to collect just 4 jars of Hexapi Organic Honey & Chocolate, Nuts, Vanilla – a truly busy bee.

German Raw Organic Spring Blossom Honey, 8.8% Hazelnuts, 2.7% Cocoa, 0.1% Vanilla

Hexapi’s artisanal Organic Honey and Chocolate, Nuts, Vanilla is made of unpasteurized pollen and propolis-containing raw organic honey by bees which are kept in protected areas with only organic farming to preserve biodiversity and ensure an eco-friendly agriculture.

Organic Honey & Chocolate, Nuts, Vanilla Recipes

It’s believed that inhabitants of Mexico, Central and South America first started cultivating the cacao bean as far back as 1250 BC or earlier. Cacao was brewed in Aztec culture as a bitter mixture that was used for ceremonial occasions like weddings and loved so much that they used cacao as currency during the height of their civilization as well.

After cacao and chocolate were introduced to Europe, travelling Spanish friars took it to various monasteries, handily spreading it around the continent. But it was not before 1842 that the Cadbury company made the very first chocolate bar and only in 1875, Daniel Peter created the tasty milk chocolate in Switzerland after eight years of trying to make his recipe work. Nowadays everyone loves chocolate and Belgium even issued a limited edition of chocolate flavoured stamps in 2013.

Despite its Amazonian roots, nearly 70 percent of the world’s cacao supply comes from Africa today with the Ivory Coast being the largest single producer, providing about 30 percent of all the world’s cacao.

Cacao trees can live up to 200 years but only make viable cacao beans for just 25 years of their lifespan. The production of chocolate requires a lot of cocoa beans - it takes 400 cocoa beans to make one pound of chocolate while each cocoa tree produces only 2,500 beans. Most of today’s chocolate comes from Forastero beans, which are considered easy to grow even though the Crillo bean is believed to make much tastier chocolate.
