Roses are a type of flowering shrub that belong to the family of Rosaceae. They were originally wild and native to the temperate regions of North America, Europe, northwest Africa and many parts of Asia and Oceania. One of the oldest fossils of roses was discovered in Colorado and dates back 35 million years ago.
There are about 100 different species of roses and the flowers of most species have five petals except for the species Rosa sericea which has only four. Most roses are deciduous but a few particularly from Southeast Asia are evergreen.
The nice scent of the rose comes from microscopic perfume glands on the petals.
The colour of the rose depends on the species and can vary in different shades of white, yellow, pink, burgundy, violet, orange and red colours. Blue and black roses do not exist since a black rose is not actually black but very dark red and to make blue roses, it is necessary to borrow the delphindin gene from another kind of flower and splice it into the genes of the rose.
Roses can survive for extremely long periods of time. The Thousand-year Rose that grows on a wall of the Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is believed to be the oldest living rose in the world.
The world’s largest rosebush is of the Lady Banksia variety. The rosebush’s canopy measures 790 square meters (8,500 square feet), its trunk has a circumference of around 3.6 meters (12 feet) and was planted in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1885.
Roses are the most popular flower in the world and their cultivation began most likely in Asia around 5,000 years ago.
In Greek Mythology, Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, is said to have created the rose from the tears she cried over the blood of her beloved Adonis. The Romans turned Aphrodite into their goddess Venus and also adopted the rose as a significant symbol. Both, Greeks and Romans used rose petals to perfume their baths and the famous Cleopatra of Egypt was believed to have covered the floor of her palace room with roses before Mark Antony visited her.
During the Roman period, roses were grown extensively in the Middle East. They were used as confetti at celebrations, for medicinal purposes, and as a source of perfume. Roman nobility established large public rose gardens in the south of Rome.
Only 3 flowers are mentioned by name in the Bible and the rose is one of them.
During the fifteenth century, the factions fighting for control in England used the rose as a symbol. The white rose represented York, while the red rose symbolised Lancaster, hence the conflict became known as the “War of the Roses“.
By now there are approximately 13,000 identifiable varieties of roses throughout the world and the leading country in exporting roses is Holland. They use 8,000 hectares (19,768 acres) of land to cultivate roses while the Rose Valley in Bulgaria is famous for its rose growing for centuries, and which produces 85% of the world’s rose oil.
Many species, particularly the Rugosa Rose, produce edible rose petals, which are a rich source of vitamin C and are also used in our Organic Acacia Honey & Rose.
Our Acacia Honey is produced by our bees from acacia tree blossoms, also called “false acacia” or botanically “Robinia pseudoacacia”. The tree originated from North America and was introduced in Germany in 1670 and planted in local castle gardens and parks.
Hexapi Organic German Acacia Honey & Rose has a remarkable purity and clarity and a high fructose to glucose ratio and therefore will not crystalize for years from the harvesting moment. It is one of the most famous and sweetest types of honey, because of the delicate flavour that still bears the smell and the scent of acacia flowers.
The honey originates from naturally grown, unplanted and untreated acacia trees in protected forest areas which give less nectar than honey from commercial acacia plantations whose canopies are much bigger, so they receive more sun to produce flowers.
Since German acacia trees bloom in May when bee populations are still underdeveloped, our bees cannot entirely use its nectar even though they are so busy with the acacia flowers that they have no time taking nectar from other plants.
Therefore, real natural German Organic Acacia Honey is rare!
Annual seasonal and biologic factors make it impossible to reproduce our Organic Acacia Honey & Rose the same from year to year so slight variations in color and taste may occur – making it a truly enjoyable natural and pure honey.
